jessytiger1
Hi, I've emailed a few uni's but maybe its their break as haven't heard back. We are currently living in the UK but both kids are heading back to uni in Australia- one in Feb and younger one in 2 years. The younger one has just started A'levels - doing Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Psychology. He was looking at UQ and as they only accept the grades from 3 A'levels to convert into ATAR - & now he's thinking of dropping Chemistry. Some uni courses he is looking at require '2 sciences.' In Australia, is Psychology seen as a science subject? Or would they want it to be one of Chemistry, Bio and Physics? Thank you!!
Seayork2002
No I think psychology comes under behavioural sciences possibly, UCAS website may have some conversion info
barrington
If you're looking at UQ, psychology is not considered a science for pre-req purposes. And I think there is only one course that requires two science subjects at UQ? But I have heard that a lot of universities are moving away from pre-requisites, so things may change in a few years time.
jessytiger1
Ok thank you!! Yes he's looking at the Advanced Science course... ok good to know, i guess maybe there are other universities that offer advanced science and only require one science... lots of 'maybes' as don't know where we will be living by then.. really wish boys could live at home and go to uni - would make life A LOT easier!!!! Julie3Girls
Yes, you probably have hit school holidays - I know our local uni was on holidays last week, and there would be catch up time Not sure if psychology would count. I would assume more of the physics, bio, chem, earth science. But more to the point, if he is looking at a science degree of some sort, which I assume he is as they are the only ones to be asking for 2 sciences, I would look at the subjects that are more likely to help with that. Which would be useful, psychology or chemistry?
onetrick
Depends on the uni. I teach psychology and have been involved in uni entry stuff, and it breaks me that is isn't a science according to some universities. But we work within the guidelines given to us. Sometimes the higher maths counted as a science as well, just to complicate things.
Prancer
We are looking at a different uni in Queensland and it specified what it was looking for - 1 of either bio, physics, chem and I think it included sport science or some sort of PE subject. There was no psych listed.
Kiwi Bicycle
I found biology and chemistry are a pair ( because there's biochemical stuff you need to know in biology, so understanding chemistry is helpful) while physics stands on it's own. To have the most options open in a science degree and you don’t want to do 3 sciences, I would pick biology and chemistry.
Prancer
https://study.uq.edu.au/study-options/programs/bachelor-advanced-science-honours-2516#entry-requirements Not sure if this is your course?

I read the entire pre-requisite guide one year to prove a principal wrong (i was right), but when I did it was either Physics OR chemistry, then if two sciences it was two of of physics, chemistry and bio BUT some unis also added psych, enviro and even specialist maths to the criteria. And some sports science courses add PE or health as well. Not at all confusing... In Vic there is an option to enter your subjects before looking at courses, does QTAC offer that? It means we could say 'let's see which options close if we remove X subject'. If so, maybe try that? Or look up the prerequisite guide for any science courses they are interested in. Etta
While classes may not be running at some unis there should still be staff who can answer admission questions. Many unis will also have an 'ask us' contact on their front page so you may be able to direct your question using this function.
