We really enjoyed the Great Western railway museum at Swindon - there is a strong focus on the social impact of the railways as well as the trains. Shildon in County Durham maybe an hour or so north of York, but the one you mention sounds good

Different stations have men selling the food that is specialised to that area. Loved sitting in between carriages watching the scenery. Sitting at a train station Christmas Day waiting for a train delayed by 12 hours due to fog. It may sound horrific to some but I loved it. I have been all around India twice this way and then a bus into Nepal. It’s intense saturation in the everyday life of the country isn’t it? We did a sleeper train journey up to Uttar Predesh and it was incredible. Our train was delayed at one station by pigs rooting (not Aussie rooting!) on the tracks.

LunaFreya
Despite what you say about the rail museum, I still want to go to York especially with the Roman ruins and Hadrian's wall near by 2
