Kyle and Jackie O - why are they so popular?

They make me sick. I had the displeasure of working in an office that had their station on during the day.  The banter and jokes and talk back  was seriously vomit inducing.

LOL That's exactly what I was coming in to say.  I'd be rather surprised if an EB member came in and said 'yes I love them, and listen to them every morning because they're my kind of people'.

I actually do listen to them most mornings. I don’t love them, would probably not socialise with them IRL but sometimes it’s just entertaining. I don’t agree with a lot of what is being said but it’s not all hard core right winged stuff, if not I would have stopped listening a long time ago. Most of the time it is just awful entertainment and plenty of “what the fuck” moments.

Some of their segments do have me screaming at the radio. Others have me laughing. Sometimes cringing. Like why would you call up the radio to call someone up to tell them something uncomfortable. A girl called up to just call her mum to reveal she was on onlyfan.

Anyway I’m not a right winged nut job. I’m pretty left leaning. Seems to surprise many people IRL when I admit I listen to them 🤪

Cant stand them.

I rarely listen to the radio anymore. I usually have spotify going. But if I have to listen I liked Jason and Lauren in the morning, they just seemed nice.

No one in the afternoons anymore.

They’re not my cup of tea at all.  I quite liked Hamish & Andy on the drive home from work back in the day when all I had was radio or cd’s to listen to.

And…. Don’t flame… I quite enjoyed Hughsey & Kate in the mornings from back back back in the day when I was breastfeeding the kid.  These days their humor is a hard pass, it hasn’t progressed and in my humble opinion is stale and not at all funny anymore, but good on them for still making a buck.  Hughsey appears to be a very wealthy man.

I liked them too, but I think Hughsey relies on shock swering nowadays to get a laugh. Lucky he couldn't swear on radio and was good on The Project, but the TV shows of the Comedy Festival, all he does is swear. A friend invited me to go to the Comedy Festival to see him and I said " no way". Lately he's just gone downhill. I think radio media personalities need turn over periodically otherwise they lose the laugh.

I saw Dave Hughes at the Melbourne comedy club in the late 90's and was thoroughly underwhelmed with his set (which had a very creepy vibe to it). It still astounds me that he become as popular as he is - but there's something for everyone I guess.

I only listen in the car, to Tradie radio 🤣 because I love 90s music. Whoever does the programming around the weekends plays a lot of songs by The Cure and I get way too excited by that. 😂

Are you me?? Lol

We saw Hughsey when he was starting out in the 90’s too @Darryl we enjoyed his gig, his style was new to me and I liked that.  Arhhh yes comedy is very much a personal preference.

We loved Jimieon too but again I felt his comedy didn’t develop pass his accent.

I like Hughsey too, but can't stand right winged heavily botoxed Kate.  But I'm old now so I just shift between ABC news 630 & 702.

ETA I love Jimieon - went to a few of his gigs, but yes I often had to ask DH to interpret for me.

Hamish  and Andy are the only radio dj’s that were ever much good imo. Just funny and any pranks were good natured.

Chrissy, Sam and Browny aren’t too bad.

Cannot stand Kyle and Jackie O, or Fifi Box…

As a teen I was driven to school by another school family. The mum would turn up the radio when the dj’s were talking, and then turn it down when a song was on. Drove me bonkers, even as a kid/ teen.

@Hermione that’s what I liked about Hamish & Andy too, good natured and I really enjoyed the classic comedy duo of goofy guy and straight guy. Reminds me of Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin movies from my childhood 😋

That's why I am enjoying Ben, Liam and Belle, they are like the younger versions of Hamish and Andy. Ben's wife just had a baby and they were all so involved with stuff like " guess what the baby's name is going to be" competition and even Liam joined in for a maternity photoshoot as he's the godfather. All good natured humour.

Liked Hughesy when he started.  Now he is so awful and constantly ranting about everything.  Same with Kate Langbroek funny early on, but awful now.

I heard that they have just signed a $200 million ten year deal.  Seriously?!!!  Do they drive that much revenue that they are worth that much and for ten years?

I don’t understand how our society has evolved/devolved to this situation.  In the same week the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Australia has criticised hairdressers and dentists for putting up prices to cover their increased operating costs, these two sign this massive contract.

Someone’s definitely fluffed up and used too many commas, like @Meepy said that is obscene!

I've been reading this thread and never imagined people were talking about that amount of money.

Unbelievable.

I wouldn't give them the money down the back of my couch.

That goes for Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek as well,

It’s actually likely to be much more than that.  The $200M about is the base amount they will take home.  They will get ratings bonuses, % of revenue, and they are getting share options too.

Let alone the conditions such as being able to work anywhere in the world with no notice.

I was talking about this at work and someone said to me that I'm just jealous and I think that in a way I must be. More than anything I am just sick of this broken system so many of us are stuck in.

I’m not jealous but really surprised that they drive that much revenue that it justifies that kind of remuneration.  They’re morning radio hosts.  Are people really that influenced by them that they would alter their spending patterns based on that?
