Yep. And then you have to find work... it is horrible to do something you really do not enjoy. I remember feeling very trapped and uncertain in my late teens :(

Yes. I was a quiet, shy kid, became a quiet very introverted adult. I recognise now some big anxiety issues. Back then, it was pretty easy to push me into what people thought would be a good path for me. And I got a 20yr career in IT out it. Wasn’t all bad, but I did end up pretty seriously burnt out and depressed regarding my work.
I want my girls to have work that hopefully they enjoy, and get satisfaction from.
It is just so hard to be making decisions about university courses and career paths at this age. So many kids have no idea what they want to do.

Dropped Dd off early for a Welcome to Yr12 breakfast today … first official yr12 event.

Bbq brekky followed by an information session.

They have jumped straight into the work - she has come home with workbooks, assessment information, heaps of online stuff.  Her first assessment task for yr12 is a dance performance in week 8 this term.

And it has already hit her that everything she does this year is going a be “last” event.  Just had her last CAPA tour, has her last CAPA night coming up.
Last everything for me too, with her being my youngest …

DD1 received her Grade 12 jersey on Wednesday, which was the last official day for the current year 12's.

She starts formal assessment in week 6!  English speech and maths assignment due that week.

It's slightly tricky that formal assessments start this term but students at our school aren't allowed to drop subjects until next year. DD has firmly decided to drop chemistry, but will continue with biology & physics. She is inclined to put no effort into chemistry beyond showing up to classes, but doesn't want to tarnish her reputation as a good student with the science faculty.

Wow!  That wouldn't work at our school, as there are several subjects that are year 12 only (music extension, English extension and general maths offline).

That seems like such a waste of time for kids planning to drop subjects.  I presume anything yr12 only would have started?  Our school made them wait until week 2 to drop subjects, make sure everyone had their final year 11 marks/positions, so they could make informed choices.
Dd hasn’t got her assessment schedule yet. Has only been told about the dance one because they need to learn the performance piece over the next 5 weeks. But I expect most subjects will have some sort of assessment at the end of term (from past experience)

It seems that every Yr 12 student at our school must be on at least their L plates (many are on their Ps). DD was only eligible to get her L license last month, so whilst she has started driving around the quieter streets, until now, she wasn’t ready to drive between home and school, through 80 km/hr zones and one unavoidable, potentially dangerous intersection. Last week, when she got out of the front passenger seat in the drop off zone, one of her teachers seemed genuinely surprised and exclaimed ‘’[DD’s name], don’t you have your license yet??’. DD was embarrassed, so we’ve been practising the route today, to get her ready to start driving (with her L plates) to school next week.

My year 11 kid got her Ps a few months ago.  Everyone in her grade will potentially be eligible for Ps by the end of this year.  Pretty much everyone starts school in my state between designated times.  There is no choice and quite an ordeal for an early entry or to delay.

We usually get a bit of break during term 4, where you can actually get a park in the carpark, because the old year 12 are gone, and the new year 12 there aren’t many who have their Ps yet, or don’t have a car if they do. By next term, it will have filled up with p platers again.
We need to try and get DD moving with her driving - she has a lot of anxiety around driving, and I have anxiety around teaching her drive, and DH has been away sooooo much lately. So not many hours up yet even through she has had her Ls for ages.

My year 11 also has their P's, along with a good chunk of her cohort.

It’s great isn’t it!  I feel like I have so much free time now I am not driving her everywhere.

This term is always weird with a yr12 student … first term of yr12, assessments happening at the end of term, so needing to do the high pressure work for those (5 different subjects) in the middle of the all the end of year stuff like capa night, presentation day, end of year celebrations.
We currently have before school classes 5 days a week, 8am start on 4 days, 7:30am on another day. Some for hsc classes, some for extracurriculars. Then after school till 5 on Monday for snack and study, and until 5 on Tuesday for drama rehearsal.  I am very glad there are only a couple more weeks, she’s running in overdrive.

I still can't wrap my head around how different the states are! My 2024 Yr 12 is currently doing her Yr 11 Exams this week, and will then be done for the year. Next year, the first week of Yr 12, is retreat, so they don't even start anything to do with yr 12 (other than the compulsory research project completed in yr 11), until February 5, 2024!

I agree @Lees75.  My kid is on holiday with nothing to do.  It is great!  She had her last exam last week.  Year 11 and 12 do the same exams if you are studying the higher level courses.  There are only a few specialist subjects that are only done by year 12s.

Exams went quite well.  Just one criteria on the physical science paper that was awful, but lots of her friends from other classes and other schools found it hard too.  Other exams were fine.  She is now totally done with maths.  She did not do any English this year so will pick that up for next year.  Really nice having her home :)

My kid got a job! Hours of trawling around shops handing out resumes and here we are. I’m so proud of them :)

I hope everyone else is doing well.

@Prancer, my DD finished with Maths forever today! I feel sad that she isn’t doing it in Yr 12, because we are a Maths nerd family, and she is really good at it, but it is the right decision for her. Maths is the type of subject you have to do regular, short homework sessions, to stay on top of content. And this year, we have really worked out that with her Autism/ADHD/Anxiety, she really can’t do homework at home during the week. So she has scraped through the year of Maths Methods, by what she has learnt in class only, with test results ranging from 55-90% and then making  up for it with the investigations where she gets A+.

Her drama teacher just sent her an email about her last assignment….”Cxxxx…….. just superb!” So we went on to SEQTA to check the mark, and she gave her an A++ lol! Obviously not a real mark, but just an encouragement that she doesn’t need to stress about drama in Yr 12. DD has now decided she will set her sights on getting a state Merit award for Drama.

@rewritethestars, that’s fantastic!!!!! Congratulations to them (and you!)

DD2 is doing maths Extn 1 & 2, which means her classes start at 7.10 a.m. every single day.

Dd3 is doing ext 1, but thankfully, period zero doesn’t start until 8 (school starting at 8:50). But the drama teacher added another class time before period zero, at 7:30, to do small group work.  Don’t know if she would have handled 7:10!! Or me for that matter, given I have to drive her as the bus doesn’t get her there until 8:45.

My DD1 has done 4 of the 5 assessment pieces for the first term of year 12 already (she's only doing 5 subjects).  Just a data test for chemistry to go this week.  She finished classes last week, so has just been at home studying and watching Netflix.

DD1 is doing two maths as well, but obviously in a different state.  She starts at 730am twice a week for her extra maths subject, but then has that line as all study periods during the week.

I feel stressed just reading some of this - 7:10 starts and a massive workload before the end of the year.  I hope they have no work over the Christmas holidays so they can relax.

Something I thought I did really well over exam time is not to put stress or pressure on my kid.  I hated all the fuss people made about are you studying enough and that your whole future was based on the results of a few exams.  Made is clear exams are not the be all and end all.  Not sure if my kid studied enough but at the same time is very independent and would not take kindly to being asked to study more.  She generally does well at school.  Looking forward to seeing how she actually went in her exams as that will give a clearer picture of how her study habits went.

Mine plays pretty hard as well. Has been out with her peers in the city twice this month - Yr 11 social cruise and Wicked, attended an overnight party, and this evening, has just got back from watching the Hunger Games prequel movie with her friends.

Then again, her older sister was a prime example of working & partying hard. She did 14 units for the HSC and the week before the HSC exams started, her entire group of friends went overnight camping in the bush to celebrate a couple of 18th birthdays.

It isn’t all work. There is a lot of fun in there as well.

Out of the 5 early starts, only 2 of them are actually hsc classes, the others are extracurricular dance and drama, which she loves. Todays early class was learning a dance for a video they are filming tomorrow, supporting a local charity. Lots of activities - being on tour, they did a massive Halloween event. Went and saw Billy Elliot the musical. Some of the kids and a couple of teachers are binge watching Harry Potter during breaks as down time. Snack and study is a combination of school work and socialising.

She has relationships with her teachers that I certainly didn’t have when I was at school., they talk about everything and anything.

From past experience with the last two, she won’t have too much over the holidays.  They usually just encourage reading of the English txts.  She does have a maths assessment due week 2 term1, so she will make sure she gets that done over the holidays.

In Victoria they are not permitted to assess for VCE unless it is in the current year.  Even if they do early start this year, they cannot assess knowledge that will contribute to a study score until next year.

But they are allowed to let students do a grade 12 subject/s in grade 11?

Yes, but they can only be assessed in the year that they do the subject.  So if you do a Year 12 subject in year 11, it is assessed in the year in which they complete it.  It then gets added to your ATAR the year you finish VCE.

Someone referred to their child in another state having assessments completed this year for a subject which they will continue and receive results for next year.  That is not allowed in Victoria.  When we do early start you cannot do scored assessment that will be included in their study score.
